PAT testing is not a legal obligation, however, UK legislation states that businesses must maintain electrical equipment in a safe condition, as well as a legal responsibility to ensure safety for employees and the public. Because PAT testing is one of the most effective ways to do this, it has become a standard way of meeting this legal obligation.
A qualified PAT Testing specialist will be able to perform the procedure on a variety of appliances, using PAT testers that will be able to show if the appliance has passed or failed a test on earth continuity, lead polarity, insulation resistance, and more. This is a quick and easy process, and should not take long to determine how safe your portable appliances are. Once each appliance completes the test, they will be labelled with a safety sticker with a barcode for ease of tracking in the future.
The frequency of inspection and testing depends upon the type of equipment, and what environment it is used in. For example, a power tool used on a construction site should be examined more frequently than a lamp in a hotel room.
Although there are no requirements for PAT testing frequency, there are recommendations. For example: in offices, shops and hotels – class 1 equipment including IT equipment should be tested every 18 months. Moveable equipment such as extension leads and portable equipment should be tested every 12 months.
On completion of the PAT Test, a PDF report will be emailed identifying all the appliances inspected and confirming their status as a pass or fail. You will be advised on the date a new test should be undertaken, which will be led by HSE guidance. A certificate will also be issued for your records.
